Long, Quiet Beaches
Kilometres of sandy beach face west onto the Andaman Sea, so sunsets are part of every day. Nang Thong and Bang Niang are the most central, while Khuk Khak and Pakarang Cape further north are quieter and popular for long beach walks.
Rainforest on Your Doorstep
The headland south of the beaches belongs to Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park, with forest trails and small coves. Around 1 to 1.5 hours inland, Khao Sok National Park protects ancient evergreen rainforest and the limestone cliffs of Cheow Lan Lake — an easy land trip on a non-diving day.
Gateway to the Similan Islands
Khao Lak's Tab Lamu pier is the main departure point for the Similan Islands National Park, roughly 60 km offshore and open each year from 15 October to 15 May. Speedboats reach the islands in about 1 to 1.5 hours, which makes Similan day trips easy from here.
Markets and an Old Town
Evening markets such as the one in Bang Niang are the easiest way to eat well and cheaply. About 30 minutes north, Takua Pa old town has Sino-Portuguese shophouses from the tin-mining era and a weekly walking street market.
Remembering 2004
Khao Lak was among the places hit hardest by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The area has rebuilt, and the Police Boat T.813 memorial in Bang Niang and the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial Park are quiet places to learn the story and pay respects. Warning towers and marked evacuation routes line the coast today.

How to Get to Khao Lak

Phuket International Airport (HKT)
About 75–80 km and 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by taxi or private transfer along Highway 402. Phuket Airport has direct international flights and frequent domestic connections from Bangkok, about 1.5 hours in the air.
Krabi and Surat Thani
Krabi International Airport (KBV) is about 2 to 2.5 hours away by road and can work well for some flight routes. Surat Thani (URT), roughly 190 km away on the Gulf side, is around 3 hours by road and useful if you combine Khao Lak with Koh Samui or Koh Tao.
Bus from Bangkok
Overnight buses from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal reach Khao Lak in roughly 12 hours. They stop along the main road through town, so check how far your hotel is from the stop.
Entry Paperwork
All foreign visitors must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within 72 hours before arrival. Check whether you need a visa on the official Thai e-Visa website, and only use these government sites — copycat sites charge fees.
Getting Around Khao Lak
Khao Lak stretches along the main road, so most people use taxis, hotel shuttles, or rent a scooter or car. On dive days you don't need to arrange anything: hotel pickup in the Khao Lak area is part of the plan.
